He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, then known as the University of Southwestern Louisiana, with a degree in business administration.

He worked in the family business, Sonnier Brothers, Inc., a major rice and soybean producer, for many years before entering politics.

Sonnier was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1987 and served until 2004. He was the Republican floor leader from 1996 to 2004.

In 2003, he was elected lieutenant governor, defeating the incumbent Democrat, Mitch Landrieu. He was reelected in 2007, defeating the Democrat Caroline Fayard.

Sonnier did not run for a third term as lieutenant governor in the 2011 election. He was succeeded by Jay Dardenne, also a Republican.

Sonnier has written two books: "The Last Plantation: A Family Memoir" (2005) and "A Rice and Soybean Planter's Perspective" (2008).

He is married to the former Patsy Comeaux and has four children.
